Interventions in churches by Comoglio architects studio Turin

[:it]The study of sacred space represents a theme of design research that has been developed over the years in numerous projects in the Turin landscape outlining an evolutionary path.

Beginning with his dissertation in 1998 entitled: “Mystical Space: design of a church in the suburbs of Turin,” and following the professional experience gained from close collaboration with Father Costantino Ruggeri in Pavia, a continuous path is undertaken by Giorgio Comoglio that has led the ComoglioArchitetti Torino firm to deal with the design of liturgical space, in the numerous interventions of church renovations and expansions with the establishment of festive chapels.
The architectural firm’s projects are characterized by attention to all the elements that make up the sacred space and the interactions between parts that are generated: the elements of the liturgy in the presbytery arrangement, the functional furnishings such as the pews of the faithful, the contextual insertion of stained glass windows and the interaction with natural light, and the study of artificial lighting, are concatenated aspects that define the overall result.
Thus even very small spaces, such as weekday chapels, take on characters of design complexity and completeness. The sacred spaces of the Comoglio studio are places of prayer where the intimist component of the space emerges, intended for contemplation and introspection, they determine a break from everyday life and the external environment, a place where the color of the stained glass windows together with the enveloping white of the walls and the sharpness of the surfaces welcome the faithful and ‘isolate’ them in a calm micro-cosmos.
Another aspect that the Turin-based architectural firm has often dealt with is the need for renovation and conversion of existing liturgical spaces, to reshape and regenerate environments intended for celebration. For example, the renovation of the church of St. Catherine of Siena, as well as in the project for Santa Maria Goretti, led to firstly reviewing the role of the presbytery area with the rearrangement and a different arrangement of the elements of the liturgy, restoring centrality and character to the focus of the celebration while at the same time eliminating superfluous and decorative redundant elements that polluted its overall perception.

Chapel of the Hospice, former military arsenal in Turin – studio Comoglio Architetti

The firm Comoglio architetti Torino has also competed in national and international competitions on the topic, such as that for the new interparish center in Lamezia terme, where new design solutions were sought for the definition of liturgical spaces and auxiliary services, as well as outdoor spaces and interaction with the urban environment.

[:en]The study of the sacred space is a topic of the design research that has been developed in various projects based in Turin, tracing an evolutionary path over the last years.

Since degree thesis in 1998, entitled: “Mistic Space: project for a new church in the outskirt of Turin,” and after collaboration with father Costantino Ruggeri in Pavia, Giorgio Comoglio developped a personal research with his office to deal with liturgical space, in numerous works including restoration, restyling and extensions, including the construction of several weekday chapels.

Studio Comoglio works are characterized by the accuracy and attention to each elements forming the sacred space, and to the interactions between parts: liturgical elements of the presbytery, functional furnishings like benches, stainless glass insertion, interaction between natural and artificial light, all these aspects are related features concurring to the final result.

Very restricted space as weekday chapels, assume a complex and complete nature. Liturgical spaces by studio Comoglio are places for prayer where emerges the intimistic aspect of space dedicated to contemplation and introspection, determining a break from everyday life and from the urban environment; a place where the color of the stained glass on the wraparound white, receive the faithful and isolate him in a quiet microcosm.

Other aspect studio Comoglio deals with are the renovation and conversion of existing liturgical spaces, in order to give a new shape and regenerate space for celebrations. For example the complete restyling of Santa Caterina da Siena Church, or the extension in Santa Maria Goretti Church, led to revise the role of the presbytery, through the rearrangement and different disposal of liturgical elements, renewing the centrality and characther to the focus of the celebration. All unnecessary and decorative elements are avoided to not affect the whole perception.

Chapel of the Ospiteria, former military Arsenal of Turin – Comoglio Architects

Comoglio architects participated in national and international competition regarding this theme, such as the contest for a new Parish center in Lamezia Terme.
